The Practitioner Variable: Does it Matter Who Gives You Reiki?
In traditional training, we are often taught that Reiki bypasses the practitioner entirely. The theory is that the client receives Universal Energy, and the practitioner acts only as a neutral channel.
But does the data back that up?
My own experience receiving Reiki as a client suggested otherwise. I noticed that sessions felt fundamentally different depending on the practitioner; some felt aligned and really enjoyable, while others felt off. I wanted to know if this was an individual experience or a measurable trend, so I put up a poll on our Instagram community.
What the Data Says
The results were significant. After filtering out respondents who had only ever seen one practitioner, 90% of participants reported that Reiki feels different from one practitioner to another.
Why the Neutral Channel Theory Might Be Incomplete
If we move away from spiritual explanations and look at biological reality, there are several reasons why the practitioner themselves could impact the session:
Emotional Contagion & Mirror Neurons: Science shows us that humans subconsciously take on the physiological state of those around them. If a practitioner is stressed, their nervous system is in a Sympathetic (fight or flight) state. The client’s body picks up on this signal, regardless of the energy being channeled.
The Coherence Factor: A practitioner who has regulated their own Parasympathetic Nervous System (rest and digest state) creates a safe place for the client’s own body. In biology, this is often referred to as physiological co-regulation, the client’s nervous system will begin to match the practitioner’s more relaxed state.
Environmental Variables: From the scent of the room to the interior design, every external detail feeds into the client’s sensory processing. If these variables don't align with the client’s comfort, it can prevent them from fully moving into a relaxed state.
The Takeaway for Practitioners
This data suggests that we are not neutral. Our personal biological state is a key part of the service we provide.
This means that self-regulation for the Reiki practitioner isn't just self-care. Your ability to ground your own nervous system is part of what allows your client’s nervous system to feel safe enough to relax.
